Ingredients:
Ingredients:
1 kg (2 lbs) white flour
40 g (1.5 oz) yeast
2 teaspoons of salt
2 teaspoons sugar
125 g (5 oz) butter or margarine
6 dl (2 cups) milk
1 egg yolk for brushing
Note: no egg in the dough, as it will make the baked dough tough

Directions:
Directions:
Heat butter until it melts. Place the yeast in slightly tempered milk. Combine all ingredients in a bowl and mix well. Knead until smooth. Allow dough to rise about 1 hour in a covered bowl in a warm place to double. (or overnight in the refrigerator)
Knead the dough together again. Form into equally long, smooth strands. Using 3 strands, lay crosswise over each other and to form a braid. The braid can stay covered again for 40 minutes. Brush with egg yolk. Place in a preheated oven (400 ° F) on second-lowest rack for 30-40 minutes.
Variations:
You can add to the dough - raisins, nuts, sunflower seeds or coarse pieces (about 5x5 or 5x10 mm) of dark chocolate.

We made this traditional Swiss New Year's day recipe with our German teacher and friend. We had great fun making it and enjoying the results.
