Sponge cake or layer cake
1 qt brick of ice cream
5 egg whites
sugar

Trim a 1. layer of sponge or layer cake 1' larger on all sides than a 1-quart brick of ice cream (or 2 pints side by side). Place on a wooden cutting board. (Keep ice cream frozen till ready to use.)

To make meringue: Beat 5 eggs whites till soft peaks form. Gradually add 2/3 cup sugar, beating till stiff peaks form.

Center brick of ice cream on cake layer. Spread meringue over ice cream and cake, sealing to edges of cake all around. Sprinkle lightly with sugar. Bake in an extremely hot oven (500º) till meringue is golden, about 3 minutes. Serve immediately.
