1 C shortening (1/2 C butter)
1 C powdered sugar
1 egg
1 1/2 tsp. almond extract
1 tsp. vanilla
2 1/2 C flour
1/2 tsp. salt
1 tsp. red food coloring

Directions:
Directions:
Mix together thoroughly shortening, sugar, egg, almond extract, and vanilla. Stir in flour and salt. Divide dough in half. Blend red coloring into one half. Roll one tsp. each of colored dough and plain dough into a strip about 4 inches long. Press strips side by side, press tightly together and twist like a rope. Place on ungreased cookie sheet , curving top of cookie down to form handle of cane. Bake 9 minutes or until brown in 375º oven. Remove from pan while warm. Mix together:
1/2 C crushed peppermint candy
1/2 C sugar.
Sprinkle mixture on cookie while still warm. Makes about 4 dozen. Dough dries out so make complete cookie at once. Don't roll all of one color dough into strips before making each cookie.
