1 C. Butter or Lard
1 C. white sugar
1 C. brown sugar
3 eggs beaten
4 C. flour
1 tsp. soda
1 tsp. salt
1 tsp. vanilla
1 T. water
1 lb. dates
1/2 C water
1/2 C. sugar

Directions:
Filling: Cook: dates, water & sugar over low heat until smooth paste is formed. Cool

Cream butter, sugar, add beaten eggs - sift together flour, soda & salt - then add to first mixture. Add vanilla & water. Divide dough and roll about 1/2 inch thick. NOTE: Best to use a pastry cloth to roll dough out on because it will help you roll the dough after filling with date mixture.
Add filling out to the edges of the dough and then roll up like a jelly roll. Freeze before cutting and baking. Cut into 1/2 thick slices and bake. Use a pastry cloth to roll out dough and to help to roll the dough like a jelly roll. Chill about 1 hr and then slice and bake.

Bake 350º for 10-12 minutes
