Ingredients:
Ingredients:
4-6 Whole Cucumbers
1 tsp. whole pickling spice
1 tsp. powdered alum
1 Tbsp. horseradish
1 Tbsp. salt
1 C. white vinegar

Directions:
Directions:
Pack cucumbers in wide-mouth quart jars. Mix horseradish, pickling spice, salt, alum, and vinegar and add to each jar. Fill jars with water; shake and adjust lids. Set in cool dark place for at least a month to cure. They will keep indefinitely. As you want pickles, empty a jar, discarding pickling mixture. Wash and cut cucumbers lengthwise in quarters and repack in clean jars.
Add 1 Cup white sugar; replace lid and shake. Shake occasionally; keep in refrigerator three days before serving. This recipe is for small amounts. I put them up in gallon jars by doubling the ingredients needed for 1 cup white vinegar. Take out as many as wanted. When I get ready for a jar of sweet pickles, they are my favorite.
