"A man who was fond of wine was offered some grapes at dessert after dinner. "Much obliged," said he, pushing the plate aside; "I am not accustomed to take my wine in pills."--Jean Antheleme Brillat-Savarin, The Physiology of Taste

Ingredients:
Ingredients:
1 stick butter or margarine
1 cup brown sugar
2 tbsp corn syrup
1 1/2 cups half and half
7 eggs
2 tsp. vanilla
1 loaf of sliced French or Italian Bread
13 x 9 greased pan

Directions:
Directions:
Preheat oven to 350ºF

On stove in medium saucepan, melt butter. Add brown sugar and corn syrup and continue to heat until smooth (just a minute or two). Pour mixture into pan. Then beat eggs, add half and half, and vanilla, beat until smooth. Set aside. Arrange bread on top of sugar mixture in pan. Lay first slice on its side, then lay next slice, overlapping the first slice about 1/3 to 1/2 of the way. Try not to cram too much bread into pan. The egg mixture must be able to get the bread soggy. Pour egg mixture over the bread and, by hand, seperate the bread piece by piece to make sure thatthe egg mixture gets each piece soaked. ( I always double the egge mixture and use most of it, just baking a little longer.) Cover pan and refrigerate overnight or for 8-24 hours. Uncover and bake at 350ºF for approx. 35-40 minutes. (A little longer if you doubled the egg mixture). The tops of the bread will get light brown, but do not burn. Serve warm and be sure to scoop all the way to the bottom to get the syrup.
Serves about 8.
