1-1/2 lbs. ground beef, chuck or round, or lean hamburger
1 Tbs. shortening
2 cups sliced onion
1 clove finely minced garlic (or you can use garlic salt instead)
1 Tbs. flour
1-1/2 tsp. salt
1 tsp. sugar
1 tsp. basil (optional)
1/2 tsp. cinnamon
1/4 tsp. pepper
1/4 tsp. oregano
2 cans (8 oz. each) tomato sauce
1 (4 oz.) can sliced mushrooms, drained
4 cups thinly sliced raw potatoes
1 cup water
1 cup shredded swiss cheese

Directions:

Cook ground beef in shortening until lightly browned. Add onion and garlic (salt); cook until onion is tender. Stir in flour, 1 tsp. salt, sugar, basil, cinnamon, pepper and oregano; mix well. Add tomato sauce and mushrooms; stir. Simmer to thicken and blend flavors, about 15 minutes. Drain. Layer half of the potatoes, meat sauce and cheese into shallow 2-quart casserole. Repeat to use remaining ingredients. Bake at 375º until potatoes are tender. About 30-35 minutes.

Great to serve with tossed salad!
