Vegetable oil for frying
1 1/2 c. cornmeal
1/4 c. shortening
2 Tbs finely chopped onion
2 tsp baking powder
1/2 tsp baking soda
1/2 cup flour
1 cup milk
1 tsp salt
1 tsp sugar
1 egg

Directions:
Directions:
Heat one inch of oil to 375ºF. Mix remaining ingredients together. Drop by teaspoonfuls into hot oil. Fry, turning once, until golden brown, about 1 minute. Drain. Makes about 4 dozen hush puppies
