1/2 cup flour, sifted
1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
2 egg whites
1 large egg
3/4 cup granulated sugar
6 tablespoons unsweetened applesauce
2 tablespoons vegetable oil
1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla extract
1 tablespoon chopped walnuts (optional)

Preheat oven to 350 F. Spray an 8-inch square baking pan with vegetable cooking spray and set aside.
In a medium bowl, combine flour, cocoa, and salt. Mix well.
In a large bowl, whisk together egg whites, egg, sugar, applesauce, oil, and vanilla. Stir in flour mixture until just blended; do not over mix. Pour batter into prepared pan; sprinkle with walnuts.
Bake until just set and a toothpick inserted in center comes out clean, about 25 minutes.
Place pan on a wire rack and cool for at least 15 minutes. Cut brownies into squares and place on a serving plate.
