2 c. flour
4 t. baking powder
1/2 t salt
4 T shortening
3/4 c. milk or half milk and half water
4 T. sugar
1 Quart strawberries, crushed and sweetened

Directions:
Directions:
Sift together flour, baking powder and salt; add 2 T sugar and shortening. Mix thoroughly with fork. Add liquid to make soft dough Turn out on floured board and toss lightly until ouside looks smooth. Divide in half. Shape into two 8 or 9-inch rounds to fit into a layer cake pan. Place one round in the pan. Spread with butter. Place other round on top. Bake in moderate over at 400 º F. about 25 minutes. Split while hot. Sprinkle sugar and butter between and on top while hot. Spread crushed berries between and on top of layers. Serve with or without cream.

Note: If your berries do not have a lot of juice, add several tablespoons of water to them several hours before you plan to use them and crush them some more.Return to ice box and they will thicken a little before use.

To the best of my knowledge, our grandmother did not leave written recipes. She was a wonderful cook but a very basic cook.Cooking three meals a day for no less than six (6) people a meal from 1910-1936 was no easy task.

I am taking the liberty of adding this and a few other recipes for some of her specialties. I have used period cookbooks for the recipes. Old-fashioned strawberry shortcake is something her two youngest children (Jean and Ken) said was one of their favorites and a regular for their June birthdays!
