1 c. shortening (1/2 butter)
1 c. sifted confectioner’s sugar
1 egg
1 1/2 tsp. almond flavoring
1 tsp. vanilla
2 1/2 c. sifted flour
1 tsp. salt
1/2 tsp. red food coloring

Directions:
Directions:
Heat oven to 375°, mix well shortening, sugar, egg, and
flavorings. Mix flour & salt, stir into mix. Divide dough in half. Add red food coloring to 1/2 of dough. Roll 1 tsp each color dough on a lightly floured board into a strip about 4” long. Place strips side by side, press lightly together and twist like a rope. Put onto ungreased cookie sheet, curve top down for handle of cane. Bake 10 minutes or until light brown. Remove while warm, sprinkle with a mixture of 1/2 cup granulated sugar and 1/2 cup crushed peppermint candies. Makes 2-3 dozen, depending on the size you make them.
