1 1/2 cups butter flavored shortening
2 cups sugar
1/2 cup molasses
2 eggs
4 cups all-purpose flour
1 Tbsp. plus 1 tsp. baking soda
1 tsp. ground cinnamon
1/2 tsp. salt
1/2 tsp. ground cloves
1/2 tsp. ground ginger
Extra sugar to roll dough balls in

In large mixing bowl, cream shortening and sugar. Add molasses and eggs. Mix well. Combine the flour, baking soda, cinnamon, salt, cloves, and ginger and gradually add to creamed mixture.
Cover and refrigerate for 1/2 hour. Shape 1/4 cupful of dough into balls. Roll in sugar. Place cookies on a greased baking sheet. Bake at 350 F. for 18-20 minutes or until edges are set. Remove to wire rack to cool. Yield: 2 dozen.
