2 c. flour
1/2 tsp. salt
1/2 tsp. baking soda
1/2 tsp. cream of tartar
3/4 c. butter
3/4 c. sugar
1 egg, well beaten
1 T. vanilla or 2 tsp. of almond extract
variety of colored sugars for decorating

Directions:
Directions:
Sift together flour, salt, soda and cream of tartar. Cream butter and add sugar gradually. Cream until fluffy. Add egg and vanilla. Mix, then add sifted ingredients and mix together. Shape dough into balls. Place on an ungreased cookie sheet (or use parchment paper). Dip tines of fork in sugar and flatten cookies in a criss-cross pattern. Or flatten with a flat bottomed drinking glass and frost when cooled. Bake at 350º for 10-13 minutes. Cool on racks.
