1/2 cup sugar for sauce
5 eggs
1 qt. whole milk
1 rounded tbsp. sugar
1 tsp. vanilla

Directions:
Directions:
Melt 1/2 cup sugar in heavy saucepan or skillet over medium heat until light brown, stirring a few times after it starts to melt with a wooden spoon. Pour quickly into 2 quart casserole and set aside.
Beat together milk, eggs, 1 tbsp. sugar, and vanilla. Pour into casserole. Set into 9x13 pan of hot water and bake in 350 degree oven for about 45 minutes or more.until set. Done when inserted knife comes out clean. Cool. Serve with the sauce which is at the bottom of the casserole.

This is a wonderful light dessert. It's especially nice for someone recovering from an illness. It slides down easily and is comforting. My mother made this often and I sometimes take this to a friend who may be ill and needs some treat.
