8 c. water
2 c. dried great northern, navy, or white beans
1 (8 oz.) can tomato sauce
1 large onion
1 Tbs. instant beef bullion
1 tsp. salt
1/2 tsp pepper
1 clove garlic, crushed
1 c. potato pearls (from church cannery) or 2 cups mashed potatoes
2 med. stalks celery, sliced
2 c. left over ham, cubed

Heat water and beans to boiling in large pan. Boil 2 minutes. Turn heat off and let stand for 1 hour.(or soak overnight) Drain, rinse and cover again with water by about 1 inch. Add tomato sauce, onion, bullion, salt, pepper. and garlic to beans. Heat to boiling; reduce heat. Cover and simmer until beans are tender, about 2 hours. Stir ham, potatoes, carrots and celery into soup. Heat to boiling; reduce heat. Cover and simmer until vegetables are tender, stirring occasionally. For thinner soup, add more water or milk. For thicker soup, add more potatoes.
