1 cup molasses
½ cup sugar
⅓ cup butter or shortening, melted
1 egg, well beaten
2½ cups all-purpose flour
2 teaspoons baking soda
1 teaspoon ground ginger
1 teaspoon cinnamon
½ teaspoon cloves
½ teaspoon salt
1 cup boiling water

Preheat the oven to 350°F . Grease a 9x9-inch pan or a standard loaf pan.
Mix molasses, sugar, and melted butter until smooth.
Beat in the egg.
Sift together flour, baking soda, spices, and salt.
Add dry ingredients to the molasses mixture.
Stir in boiling water last, mixing gently until smooth.
Pour batter into the prepared pan.
Bake for 35–45 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
