½ cup warm water
2 packages active dry yeast
1½ cups lukewarm milk
½ cup sugar
2 teaspoons salt
2 eggs
½ cup soft shortening or lard
7–7½ cups sifted all-purpose flour (Gold Medal noted)

Directions:
Directions:
Measure warm water into a mixing bowl.
Add yeast and stir to dissolve.
Add milk.
Stir in sugar, salt, eggs, and shortening.
Gradually mix in flour until the dough is smooth and easy to handle.
Turn onto a floured board and knead until smooth and elastic, about 5 minutes.
Place dough in a greased bowl, turning once to grease top.
Cover with a damp cloth and let rise in a warm place (about 85°F) until doubled, about 1½ hours.
Punch down and let rise again until nearly doubled, about 30 minutes.
Divide dough in half and shape into rolls or coffee cakes.
