1 gallon of tomato sauce or pulp
1 1/2 cup white vinegar
2 cups sugar
3-4 large onions ground
3 tablespoons salt
1 tablespoon black pepper
1 bag of pickling spice (2 tablespoons in a double square of cheesecloth, twist and tie shut)

If using pulp, boil one hour before adding vinegar and sugar

If using tomato sauce, add sugar and vinegar right away. Add all ingredients and bring to a boil. Boil for about 1/2 hour to cook down. If it is too tarte, add more sugar.

Take out the spice bag and discard.

Let cool, and puree in blender if it is too chunky. Place in jars and refrigerate.
