"A man who was fond of wine was offered some grapes at dessert after dinner. "Much obliged," said he, pushing the plate aside; "I am not accustomed to take my wine in pills."--Jean Antheleme Brillat-Savarin, The Physiology of Taste

Ingredients:
Ingredients:
5 C flour
1 tsp baking powder
1/2 tsp salt
1/2 tsp fresh grated nutmeg
1 C butter
1 C sugar
1/2 C brown sugar
2 tsp vanilla
3 eggs
1 tsp soda
2 T buttermilk

Directions:
Directions:
Sift dry ingredients except soda which is added to the buttermilk. Cream butter and sugars until light and fluffy. Add vanilla. Add eggs one at a time. Dissolve baking soda in buttermilk. Add to butter mixture, then start adding flour mixture until it forms a dough that can be rolled out.

Form into a rectangle (flatten out) and cover with plastic wrap. Chill for a couple of hours. Remove from refrigerator and cut dough into thirds. Roll out one section at a time and keep the other dough chilled until ready to use. Roll on a lightly floured board to 1/4 inch thick and cut with a 2 or 3 inch biscuit cutter. Lay on cookie sheet that has been lined with parchment paper and sprinkle with sugar or a mixture of cinnamon and sugar.

Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Bake for 7-9 minutes or until lightly browned around the edges. Let stand on cookie sheet for a few minutes before removing to baking racks.

Personal Notes:
A true Southern cookie! These cookies are soft, have a wonderful flavor and the recipe makes a lot of cookies. They were almost always in someone’s lunch box at school. Granny most always had tea cakes or sugar cookies in a big blue bowl on top of her wood stove.
