1/4 cup pure olive oil
2 large onions, coarsely chopped
2 large garlic cloves, minced
1 28-ounce can crushed tomatoes
1/4 cup water
2 ounces basil leaves
3/4 teaspoon sugar
1/2 teaspoon pepper
1/2 teaspoon thyme

Directions:
Directions:

  1. Heat olive oil in a large kettle. Add onions and garlic and saute until onions are soft. Do not burn the garlic. Stir in tomatoes, broth, water, basil, sugar, pepper, and thyme and simmer for 20 minutes.

  2. Remove from heat and puree in two or three batches in the food processor.

  3. Serve hot or chilled.
