1/2 c. butter
2 c. sugar
3 c. plain flour
4 eggs, separated
1 c. cold water
3 tsp. baking powder
1/3 tsp. salt
1 1/2 tsp. vanilla

for icing:
3 c. sugar
1/2 c. cocoa
3/4 c. evaporated milk
1 stick butter
1/4 c. light Karo syrup

Directions:
Directions:
Cream butter and sugar until light and creamy. Add egg yolk, one at a time, beating well. Add water and flour alternately, adding flour last that has been mixed with salt and baking powder. Fold in beaten egg whites. Bake in 5 (8 or 9 in.) cake pans. Frost with chocolate icing.
For icing:
Mix sugar, cocoa, milk and syrup well in a large saucepan. Add butter. Cook until a soft but firm ball will form when dropped into cold water. Remove from heat. Start stacking layers. Icing should penetrate layers. Ice top and sides or cake with remaining icing.
