"A man who was fond of wine was offered some grapes at dessert after dinner. "Much obliged," said he, pushing the plate aside; "I am not accustomed to take my wine in pills."--Jean Antheleme Brillat-Savarin, The Physiology of Taste

Directions:
Melt shortening, add squash, sugar, salt & milk

Dissolve yeast in a little warm water until bubbly, add to above mixture

Add 2 cups of flour and mix thoroughly. Start adding flour until you can put dough on a board (counter) and work it. Knead dough until it is workable.

Put into greased bowl, flip dough so all dough hits the grease. Cover & let rise in a warm place for about 2 hours. Punch and form into roll shapes, put into greased 13x9x2 pan or sheet pan. Cover and let rise for an hour more. Bake in a 350 degree oven for 35 minutes or until brown

Personal Notes:
This was a recipe from Grandma Grace French. If you buy squash in a can, make sure it is just squash NOT squash pie filling (I have made that mistake!) She didn't give great directions, so only make this recipe if you are used to making bread. "Knead until workable" isn't helpful unless you have made bread before!
