1/2 cup shortening
1/2 cup (1 stick) butter, softened
1 cup granulated sugar
1/2 cup packed brown sugar
1 egg, beaten
1 teaspoon vanilla
1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon cinnamon, optional
1 1/2 cup rolled oats
3/4 cup chopped pecans

Directions:

Cream the shortening, butter, granulated sugar and brown sugar in a mixing bowl until light and fluffy. Add the egg, vanilla, flour, baking soda, salt, cinnamon and oats in the order listed, mixing well after each addition. Stir in pecans. Chill, covered, for 1 hour. Shape the dough into walnut-size balls and place 2 inches apart on an ungreased cookie sheet. Flatten with a buttered glass dipped in additional granulated sugar. Bake at 350 degree for 10 to 12 minutes.

Finally, I found an oatmeal cookie recipe that does not flatten. These are very good.
