Ingredients:
Ingredients:
Box Oven and Box Oven Cake
Box oven, use to bake cakes or other oven items:

Supplies:
Box cake mix and the ingredients, mixing bowl and spoon and butter & foil for the pan

4 empty veggie cans of the same height (this is your oven rack)

Baking pan of sturdy metal, not disposable

Plain cardboard box (flaps cut off) it should be about 3” wider on all 4 sides than your baking pan and allow for the height of the cans + the height of the baking pan + about 6”. This will allow for the heat to move around

Heavy duty aluminum foil

Foil tape from the hardware store

Assembly:
You will be putting the box open side down to create the oven. You will need to cut a 4x4 or 5x5 peeking window in the top of your oven, put this to the side as you will need it for the cooking process.

Cover the peeking window with foil. Make it larger than your hole by adding more foil to all sides or cut a larger piece from the flaps that you removed. You can add something to use as a handle because you will want to lift it to check in your food and it will get hot (do not use plastic as it could melt and burn someone). You can make a large foil ball or wire handles to use with a potholder or tings, or wire loops to use a fork to lift. use the foil tape to cover all so that it will not catch on fire.

Cover the box inside and out with foil and use the foil tape to cover all seams. This is very important or your oven will catch on fire.

Remove all paper from your cans.

To use:
* Make your fire until you have hot coals, about 1-2 of your cans estimated amount.
* Place the 4 cans in a pattern to hold your baking pan.
* Place your hot coals in the center of the coals and spread out (you don’t want the flames, just hot coals).
* Put your box oven on top and cover your peeking window. Let this heat the inside of your oven.
* Butter/flour your baking pan and fill with your cake or other baking item (I have never baked cookies but it should work the same!).
* Working quickly so you don’t let it cool down too much- remove the oven, place your baking pan on the cans, remove the oven and the window cover.
* Bake for about the same amount of time as your cake directions say. The first time you use the oven, you will want to take a peak about 1/2 way through and then 3/4 way through so that it does not burn...it may take less or more time depending on how many and how hot your coals are.
* The baked item will test done just like you would at home but do all peeking and testing through the peekaboo window to keep the temperature as even as possible. If you let it get too cool while baking, your cake will “fall” just like at home.

Enjoy!

To store:
Let all cool and store together inside the box oven until your next camp cookout. Keep tape handy and make repairs as needed to prevent an “oven” fire.
