¼ c. cornmeal
⅔ c. oatmeal
1¼ T. salt
½ c. shortening
½ c. molasses
4 c. hot water
5 c. flour
2½ T. yeast
4½-5 c. flour

Directions:
Directions:
Soak cornmeal, oatmeal, salt, shortening, and molasses in the hot water. Mix the flour and yeast, then pour in wet ingredients. Mix well, then add 4½-5 cups flour. Bake for 35 minutes at 350ºF.

This is a recipe my mom got from a local cookbook when she started baking bread to sell in New Brunswick. People here didn't consider bread "brown" unless it had molasses in it. We liked it with raisins added.
