1/2 cup shortening
3/4 tsp salt
1/2 tsp cinnamon
1/2 tsp cloves
1/2 tsp nutmeg
1/2 tsp allspice
2 T cocoa
1 1/2 cups sugar
2 eggs
1 1/2 tsp baking soda
2 cups flour
3/4 cup raisins
3/4 cup dates, chopped
3/4 cup chopped nuts
1 1/2 cup unsweetened applesauce

Directions:

Blend shortening, salt, spices and cocoa. Add sugar and cream well. Add eggs, one at a time, beating after each. Ad soda to flour. Sprinkle 2 T flour mixture over dried fruit and toss. Add remaining flour to creamed mixture alternately with applesauce. Add nuts and floured fruit to batter and blend. Bake in greased 13 x 9 inch pan. Bake at 350 degrees 55-60 minutes.
