BOTTOM PART:

3/4 c. dark corn syrup
1/4 c. molasses
1 c. boiling water
1 t. baking soda
1 egg, lightly beaten



TOP PART:

1 c. flour
1 T. shortening or lard
2/3 c. firmly packed dark brown sugar
1 unbaked 9" pie shell

Directions:
Prepare bottom part - In medium bowl, combine corn syrup, molasses and water. Add baking soda. Beat a little molasses into egg, then stir back into mixing bowl.
Prepare top part - With a pastry blender, mix flour, shortening & sugar until texture of course crumbs. Mix 1 c. of crumbs into molasses mixture and pour into the pie shell. Scatter remaining crumbs on top pie. Bake in a 400 oven for 25 minutes, until lightly browned and filling is puffy. Remove from oven & let sit at room temperature before cutting.
