1/2 c sugar
1 lg piece orange peel
10 whole cloves
1 cinnamon stick
2 c red wine (merlot or cab)
1/2 c orange juice
2 t vanilla extract
1/2 c blackberries (raspberry/ cherry)
3-6 Bosc pears (anjou)

Directions:
Directions:
Place all ingredients (except pears) in saucepan that fits pears snugly with room to be submerged. Bring red wine to simmer to dissolve sugar. When wine comes to simmer strain fresh fruit. Peel pears right before you add to poaching liquid. Lower into saucepan. Let pears poach on medium low heat for 20-25 minutes, rotating pears every 5 minutes. When pears have been poached, keep upright in liquid and remove from heat allowing them to cool down in saucepan. Refrigerate overnight. Remove pears from liquid and reduce liquid to syrup stage. Brush on pears prior to serving.
