Ingredients:
Ingredients:
1 cup of butter, softened
1 cup of vegetable oil (I know--but trust me and put in the whole cup!)
1 cup of granulated sugar
1 cup of powdered sugar
2 large eggs, room temperature
1 teaspoon real vanilla extract
4 1/2 cups of all purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon cream of tartar (helps make them soft--don't skip it!)

Directions:
Directions:

Preheat over to 375. In a large bowl, beat the butter, oil and sugars REALLY well. I use a stand mixture and leave it on high for a good five minutes. Beat in the eggs until well blended. Combine the flour, baking soda, and cream of tartar; gradually add to the creamed mixture.
At this point, you can chill the dough or not as you choose. I do, for at least an hour because I like them to stay thicker. But they're fine either say. Whichever you choose, when you're ready to bake, roll into balls and dip the tops of the balls in sugar. Leave as is, or flatten slightly with your fingers and bake until lightly browned, 8 - 10 minutes. Remove to wire racks to cool. In true Dick Duvall style, be sure to sneak a few before they're cool...and then deny it firmly if anyone asks!

Personal Notes:
Personal Notes:
Dick Duvall married my mom and adopted and raised me. He loved cookies and these were his favorites, so I baked them for him often growing up. He passed away last year and I shared them at his memorial...which I think he would have loved!
