Mix together and let stand until cool.
1 c. chopped dates
1½ c. boiling water
1 tsp. baking soda

In another bowl, blend together in order given and add to the
date filling.
1 c. sugar
½ c. shortening
2 eggs
1½ c. flour
½ tsp. soda
½ t. salt

Put in a greased 9X13 pan.
Top with the following topping.
½ c. white sugar
½ c. brown sugar
½ c. chocolate chips
½ c. chopped nuts

Bake @350* for 40 minutes, serves 8-10. Top with whipped cream or vanilla ice cream.
