Sisters, Mary May and Ione Steichen, both told stories of helping their Grandma Christine Schroeder on her farm when the wheat threshing crews came, and later in the summer, when the silo was to be filled with corn. In the 1930's, when they had learned to drive the family car, they would stop in Stillwater to get groceries to feed 20-30 men and pick up a large 20-25 lb. beef roast or similar meat roast. At Grandma's they would peel a 5-gallon bucket of potatoes and get water from the cistern right outside the house and help Grandma as she cooked and baked with a wood stove. Both girls remember being considered a nuisance and being teased while there at Grandma's house, (perhaps because many of their uncles still lived and worked on the farm with Christine.)
