Stories shared by a Evelyn Otto

Thank you for asking for stories about our Schroeder ancestors! My family wanted me to share what we heard from my mother, Ione. One of them gives more detail about the pigs to sale.

Around the time Herman was 6 years old, he helped his dad take a load of pigs to sell, probably to Guthrie. They had to cross the Cimarron River but it was running high from rains. While they were studying the situation, a neighbor came along going to the sale too, and it was decided that Herman would take the wagon load of pigs across with the neighbor since Anton was needed at home and Herman could take the risk! Herman was given the responsibility to sell the pigs with the neighbor’s help and bring the money back home.

Another responsibility for Herman that his parents expected of him was to drive their cattle herd, a distance of over 12 miles, to their new farm when Herman was around 11. This took him 2 days driving them across Payne County when roads were sometimes trails, and he had to stop for the night at a farmer’s home and camp there. It was amazing how Herman accomplished these jobs at such young ages!

To add to Elizabeth’s memory of the farmyard of Grandma and Grandpa Schroeder, I loved playing with the flowers of the trumpet vine that grew on the north side of the house. We would put the flowers on the end of our fingers and pretend that we had long finger nails. I also remember Grandma Anna talking about the 4 o’clocks, flowers that would open up in the afternoon and evening, that were in a flowerbed on the south side of house. I thought that was amazing that flowers could tell time that way, and that is why it’s a memory I have never forgotten. I loved playing in the yard under the shade trees, swinging on the swing that hung from a tree branch, climbing the tree by the sidewalk to the house and listening to the song of the doves, the sound of which always brings happy memories of staying at the farm.
