1/4 cup butter or margarine
1 cup sugar
2 eggs
1 tsp. vanilla
2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
1 tsp. baking powder
1 tsp. salt

Icing:
2 cups confectioner’s sugar
2 tablespoons butter, softened
1 1/2 to 2 1/2 tablespoons milk
Food coloring, if desired

Thoroughly mix butter, sugar, eggs and vanilla. Blend in flour, baking flour and salt. Cover and chill at least 45 minutes. Heat oven to 400 degrees. Roll dough about 1/8 inch thick on lightly-floured pastry cloth. Cut into desired shapes. Place on ungreased baking sheets and bake 6 to 8 minutes or until edges begin to be very light golden. Makes about 3 – 4 dozen cookies depending on the size of the cutter.

To frost: Combine sugar, butter and 1 1/2 tbsp. milk. Beat ingredients until mixture is smooth enough to spread or pipe on cookies. Add up to 1 tbsp. more milk, if necessary. For colored icing, divide icing into several portions and stir a few drops of food coloring into each. Use a butter knife to spread icing on cooled cookies. Makes about 1 cup of icing.

This is the recipe I have always used and is a favorite cookie of my children and grandchildren. I decorate them with frosting and sprinkles appropriate for the occasion. Once Sarah frosted the same cookie for 20 minutes....couldn't decide which color frosting she liked the best! Sugar rush!
