1/3 cup sugar, plus 1 tsp for sprinkling

Directions:
Position rack in middle or lower third of oven and preheat to 400º.

Mix together flour, 1/3 cup sugar,, the baking powder, salt, and baking soda in a bowl. Using large holes on a box grater, grate butter into flour mixture. Work in butter with your fingers. (Mixture should resemble course meal.) Stir in dried cranberries.

Whisk together sour cream and egg in a small bowl until smooth. Stir sour cream mixture into flour mixture with a fork until large dough clumps form. Press dough into a ball with your hands. (Dough will be sticky in places and may seem too dry at first. But as you press, the dough will come together.)

Transfer to a lightly floured surface and pat into a 7 - 8 in circle about 3/4 in chick. Sprinkle with remaining 1 tsp sugar. Cut into 8 triangles; arrange scones about 1 inch apart on a parchment paper-lined cookie sheet. Bake until golden, 15 - 17 minutes. Let cool 5 minutes.
