4 eggs
2 cups sugar
2 cups flour
1 cup milk
2 tsp baking powder
1 stick margarine
1 tsp vanilla

Icing:
3 c. sugar
1 c. milk
1 stick margarine
1 t. vanilla

Cake:
Beat eggs. Add sugar and beat until creamy. Add flour and baking powder. In the meantime, have margarine and milk heating. When hot add to egg, sugar and flour mixture. Add flavoring. Makes two nine inch layers. Bake at 350° for 25-30 minutes.

Icing:
Place sugar in a heavy saucepan on high heat until it browns on the bottom. Add milk and margarine then stir. Cook about 10 minutes until mixture forms into a soft ball when dropped into cold water. Remove from heat and add vanilla. Stir until cool then spread on cake layers.

Grandmother would always buy Caramel Cakes from Alice Crouch. This was one of Richard's favorite cakes. One day he asked Mrs. Crouch if she would give him the recipe for the cake with the promise that he would not make the cake until she no longer could.
