Ingredients: 4 c. Flour 1 tsp baking soda 1 tbsp baking powder 1 c. Sugar 1 c. Shortening 2 c. Sour milk ( I sour the milk wth 2 tsp. Lemon juice)
I often add in fresh blueberries or cranberries. Try chocolate chips or chopped nuts. Fancy them up by drizzling with icing . Or dust with icing sugar. To enjoy with a soup, stew, chilli or whatever… Try adding in diced cheddar with chives or parsley.

Personal
Notes: Just an hour’s drive to the southwest of Toronto, lies the small city of Kitchener. It is home to a large Mennonite population. Their influence can be found throughout the community but most noticeable is there contribution to the culinary life of the region. My mother bought me a cookbook written by a woman from one of the settlement families. This recipe is one of my favourite go-to recipes….it’s simple, versatile and delicious! Enjoy creating.
