1 cup shortening
1 cup sugar
2 eggs, beaten
1/4 cup orange juice
2 tablespoons orange peel, grated
1 teaspoon vanilla
2 cups flour
2 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon soda
2 cups quick oats
1/2 cup dates
1/2 cup nuts, chopped

Cream shortening and sugar. Stir in eggs. Add orange juice, orange peel and vanilla. Stir in flour, salt, soda. Add oats, dates and nuts.

Drop onto greased cooky sheet by rounded teaspoons. Bake at 375 degrees 12 to 15 minutes or until golden. Makes about 4 dozen. Note: can use raisins instead of dates. Pecan pieces or walnuts work well.
