1 3/4 cup flour
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
1 cup sugar
1/2 cup shortening
1 egg
3/4 cup buttermilk
2 teaspoon vanilla
1 cup chopped walnuts or pecans, optional

Directions:
Directions:
Preheat oven to 300 degrees. Lightly grease cookie sheet or line with parchment paper. Mix dry ingredients. Cream sugar and shortening, then beat in egg, buttermilk, and vanilla. Add dry ingredients and nuts.

Place rounded tablespoons of dough onto prepared cookie sheets. Bake 8 to 10 minutes. Cool on baking sheet for 3 to 5 minutes before moving to wire rack.
