½ teaspoon baking soda
1 cup cornmeal
1 cup flour
¼ teaspoon salt
½ cup softened butter
⅔ cup sugar
2 eggs, beaten

Directions:
Directions:
1. Preheat oven to 375º F.
2. Stir together buttermilk and baking soda in a bowl. In another bowl, stir cornmeal, flour, and salt.
3. Melt butter in a 9-inch cast-iron skillet over medium-low heat. Remove from heat; stir in sugar, then eggs and buttermilk mixture until combined. Stir in cornmeal mixture until only a few lumps remain.
4. Bake until a toothpick inserted in center comes out clean, 30-40 minutes.

This is a delicious old-time recipe that has a sweet, cake-like consistency that is very moist. I wouldn't change a thing (with the exception of adding a little creamy butter and warm maple syrup all over the top)!
