Get ashes from trees burned before it rains. Put ashes in a trough; cover with water. Let water drip out.(Leaching Lye). It should be an amber color.

Daddy gave me these instructions, I suppose, because I was curious about how things were done in the old days. For some reason, I wrote it down on the same scrap of paper as "Hot Water Cornbread," but it is NOT to be confused as a recipe.

Now, if I just had a recipe for making soap with the lye. I'm afraid it might involve butchering a hog and rendering some fat, though.
