1 lb dried green split peas
1 bouillon cube
3/4 lb smoked ham, cubed OR 1 ham hock
1 small onion cubed
1 clove garlic roughly chopped
1 bay leaf
3 carrots, sliced 1/2 inch thick
salt to taste
pepper to taste
10 cups water

Directions:
Directions:
In a 6 to 8 quart pot, combine all the ingredients. Bring to a boil. Reduce heat to Low, cover and simmer for 2 hours. Remove bay leaf (and ham hock bones if using) and serve.
Optional: remove ham and puree with immersion blender. I don't do this.
