Mama's Donuts Recipe

Dissolve: 1 pkg. yeast into 1/4 c. lukewarm water

Combine:
1/2 c. boiling water
2 T. shortening
1/2 c. sugar
1 1/2 t. salt

Cool to lukewarm by adding 1/2 c. fresh milk

Blend in and mix well:
1 egg
1 t. nutmeg
dissolved yeast-water mixture

Add 3 3/4 c. sifted flour. Mix to a soft dough.

Place dough in greased bowl (yellow Pyrex); cover and refrigerate 2-3 hours or overnight.

Roll out on floured board or pastry cloth to 1/4 " thickness.

Cut into rounds; place on wax paper in warm place and let rise 40 minutes. Fry.

Note: You may need to work in extra flour when rolling them out.

Glaze with powdered sugar and water glaze.

These are the best piping hot and right out of the frying pan. Mother's donut dough tended to be sticky, and the O-shapes often twisted and turned into figure eights. The twistier they were, the more we liked them!
