4 oz dried mixed fruit
2 oz butter/margarine
1 large egg, beaten
5 Tbsp "Camp"
2 Tbsp water
8 oz SR Flour - sieved
3 oz castor sugar
1 Tbsp golden syrup or honey
plus a little extra for glazing

Directions:
Directions:
Grease and line a 1 lb loaf tin. Mix the dried fruit, Camp and water and leave in a small bowl for 30 minutes.
Preheat oven to 350ºF/180ºC/Gas mark 4.
Rub fat into flour until mixture resembles fine breadcrumbs. Stir in the sugar, fruit mixture, egg and golden syrup/honey. Beat well and spoon mixture into prepared tin and bake in oven 1 hour or until firm to touch. While still hot, brush top with syrup or honey and allow to cool.

Serve lightly buttered.

Cover with paper before putting in oven or it will be scorched Earth rather than Battle of Britain!

This recipe was a favourite of my mother-in-law, Alice Stratford. I am not sure how old it is, but from the name, it could be a war time recipe.
