4 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened
1 cup sugar
2 eggs
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
½ cup plain yogurt
2 cups flour
2 teaspoons baking powder
1 teaspoon anise seed, toasted and crushed
½ teaspoon baking soda
½ teaspoon salt
½ teaspoon freshly grated nutmeg
1 cup chopped pears
½ cup chopped walnuts

Preheat oven to 350°F. Grease and flour a 9 by 5-inch loaf pan. Cream together butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Add eggs, one at a time, and beat until well blended. Mix in vanilla and yogurt.

In a sperate bowl, combine the flour, baking powder, anise seed, baking soda, salt, and nutmeg. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the batter, mining to incorporate. Stir in pears and nuts and mix until well blended.

Pour the batter into the prepared pan and smooth top. Bake for 50 to 60 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center of the loaf comes out clean. Cool in the pan on a rack for 15 minutes, then remove and cool completely.
