"Plain fresh bread, its crust shatteringly crisp. Sweet cold butter. There is magic in the way they come together in your mouth to make a single perfect bite."--Ruth Reichl

Ingredients:
Ingredients:
8 eggs
½ c - ¾ c milk
dash of salt and pepper
½ tsp vanilla extract
At least 2 slices of bread per person
powdered sugar in a sifter or shaker

Directions:
Directions:
Crack the eggs in a bowl and pierce the eggs with a fork and add in the milk, salt, pepper and vanilla and beat well until blended. Dip regular white bread slices into the batter one side at a time and then the other side. You want it to absorb the egg mixture but not get overly soggy.

Quickly move the dipped bread to a lightly oiled hot griddle pan and cook on each side until you see golden brown color underneath. Remove to a plate. While warm dust them generously with powdered sugar (place the powdered sugar in a sifter and just shake over the french toast).

Personal Notes:
Personal Notes:
- I went to a restaurant that had a sign out front that said 'breakfast at any time', so I ordered French Toast during the Renaissance.

Mom said, "We loved making this dish with our children. With a little help from Bill and myself our children, Billy and Belle, could help make it no matter their age, whether beating the eggs or dipping the bread or dusting the finished product with powdered sugar. "

The photo is of Belle dipping the bread in the egg mixture for french toast at about 2 or 3 years old. Billy must have been manning the spatula.
