1 cup of barley
1 cup of dried split yellow peas
4 cups of diced potatoes
3 bay leaves
2 teaspoons dried thyme
salt to taste
3 cups of water
2 (12 ounce) bottles of beer
1 tablespoon malt vinegar
salt to taste
1 tablespoon of parsley, minced

Directions:
Directions:
In a stockpot over medium-high heat, add barley, peas, potatoes, bay leaves, thyme, salt, and water. Bring to a boil. Reduce heat to simmer, and simmer for 1 1/2 hours, or until mixture thickens.

Add beer and return to boil. Reduce heat to simmer, and simmer for another 20 minutes. Add vinegar, and salt to taste. Simmer for another 5 to 10 minutes. Serve with sprinkle parsley.

Note: This was a soup served in Germany in the 18th Century, and you can add fish, ham, sausage, and other vegetables for more substance.
