1 c. shortening
3 c. sugar
6 eggs
3 c. flour
1/2 tsp. salt
1/4 tsp. baking soda
1 c. buttermilk
1 tsp. vanilla
1 (5.5 oz. can or bottle of chocolate syrup)

Directions:
Directions:
Preheat oven to 350ºF. Cream together shortening and sugar. Add eggs one at a time, beating well after each egg. Sift together flour, soda and salt; add to creamed mixture, alternating with buttermilk - beginning and ending with buttermilk. Add vanilla and blend well. Pour half of the batter into a well greased and floured 10-inch tube pan. Add chocolate syrup to the remaining batter; blend and pour chocolate mixture over top of other batter. Fold in gently with spatula for marble effect. Bake at 350º for one hour and 10 minutes. Cool on wire rack. Frost if desired.
