1 cup brown sugar
1 cup white sugar
3 cups flour
Also a PINCH of salt
1 SMALL cup butter or lard

2 eggs [separated]
1 cup sour milk
1 teaspoon [baking] soda
1/2 teaspoon vanilla
3/4 cup raisins (FLOURED)

Directions:
Directions:
Work this [brown and white sugar, flour, salt] together like pie crust.

Take out 1 CUP and set aside for top of cake.

Add to the rest, 2 eggs-whites and yolks (separately)-beaten (WHITES LAST) and sour milk.

Soda, vanilla, raisins.

Put in long pan and sprinkle on top with the cup of the first mixture-which was set aside

Bake in 350º oven

Relatives lived on a farm in Jefferson, adjacent to the Crawfish River. I don't recall their names, or the relationship. I visited once, about age 9, with the Schendel family (was Uncle Ben still alive?) It was a magical day, other than tasting warm fresh milk! We visited Aztalan State Park, nearby. I'm sure this family is the reference to the source of this recipe.
