2 c. white sugar
¾ c. scant cup lard
2 eggs
1 c. sour milk
1 tsp. baking soda
2 tsp. vanilla
6 tbsp. cocoa
3 c. flour

Directions:
Directions:
Cream sugar and lard until fluffy. Add eggs and beat. Combine baking soda, cocoa and flour. Mix vanilla into sour cream. Alternate dry and wet ingredients, stirring after each addition. Bake @ 350º for 8-12 minutes or until brown and not soft in the middle.

This recipe was from Grandma (Inez) Zaerr. The upper right hand corner was labeled "Ma", which is what Grandpa Gene called his mom. There were no instructions for mixing or baking, so I guessed. When families milked their own cows for their milk, it was common for some to sour before they could drink it all. So, they learned to bake with it. You can substitute shortening for the lard, but it won't taste like Grandmas! Grandma used chicken fat to supplement the lard if she had it.
