4 T butter at room temperature (plus more for buttering pan)
1 C granulated sugar (plus more for dusting top)
1 beaten egg
4-6 tart apples-1" dice to make 6+ cups
1 T vanilla
1/2 t baking powder
1/2 t baking soda
1/2 t salt
1 T ground cinnamon
1 t ground nutmeg
1 C flour
1/2 C roughly chopped toasted walnuts

Directions:
Directions:
Preheat to 350 degrees
Butter 8 or 9" square or deep dish pie pan
Cream butter with sugar, add beaten egg and vanilla
Add mixed dry ingredients to batter and then add apples
Spoon into pan. Top with toasted walnuts and dust with sugar
Bake 45 to 55 minutes until inserted toothpick comes out clean
Serve warm with plain yogurt, whipped cream or ice cream

A simple desert welcomed especially by an Irish household. No autumn should pass without making this basic apple cake.
